Work with Me!

As a Postdoc:

I am currently recruiting for two 5-year Postdoctoral Research Associate positions (https://jobs.ncl.ac.uk/job/Newcastle-Research-Associate-in-Quantum-Foundations/1210881001/). I am also keen to support applications to work with me as an independent Research Fellow (e.g., via EPSRC Postdoctoral Fellowships, 1851 Research Fellowships, Newton International Fellowships, MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships, Branco Weiss Fellowships, Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships, LMS Early-Career Fellowships, etc).

As a PhD Student:

Unfortunately, I don’t have any funded PhD positions available currently, but please get in contact if you’re interested in doing a PhD with me at Newcastle, as there are many possible funding schemes we can explore, for either partial (e.g., Google PhD Fellowship, Nvidia Graduate Fellowship) or full funding (see e.g., Newcastle Postgraduate Funding Portal, Commonwealth PhD Scholarships, Commonwealth PhD Scholarships for High-Income Countries, Bell Burnell Graduate Scholarships). While UK students can apply for help for self-funding (e.g., through the UK Postgraduate Doctoral Loan Scheme), this is obviously not ideal, so I try to avoid this where possible. Also, I collaborate closely with QETLabs at the University of Bristol, and am very happy to co-supervise PhD students in the QIST CDT, which has roughly 10 fully-funded places per year.

As an Undergraduate/Master’s Student:

I supervise some BSc Computer Science, MSc Computer Science and MSc Advanced Computer Science students at Newcastle for their Project and Dissertation modules, typically on projects related to my research, and am hoping over the next few years to increase the availability of taught content on quantum information and computing on these courses – therefore, if you are at an early stage in your academic journey and are interested in working with me, it is worth looking into these courses (especially as schemes exist to help with funding, e.g., Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships, Fulbright Newcastle University Award).

I am also potentially willing to apply with students for funding for Summer Internship projects (e.g., through the London Mathematical Society Undergraduate Research Bursary scheme, or for Newcastle University students through the Research Scholarships scheme). However, for ethical reasons, I am unwilling to take on unfunded (i.e., unpaid) interns, so please identify potential funding sources before getting in touch.

As a Collaborator:

I have current and developing collaborations with both theorists and experimentalists at many Universities worldwide (e.g., Bristol, Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt, Northumbria, Oxford, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Nagoya, Kagawa, LMU Munich), and am very willing to discuss potential collaboration with other academics, so please get in contact with me if you are interested in collaborating!
